Edgware Town 1- Spelthorne Sports 1

Combined Counties Premier Division North

Edgware Town 1

Spelthorne Sports 1

“We only had 10 men” was the chant at the end of the match as the Wares gained a point having had keeper Anguzu sent off on 23 minutes for two yellow cards. A superb effort by the 10 men and Sub keeper Barkat who pulled off at least 4 world class saves.

The match started with The Spelly having learnt their lesson from the 3-1 home defeat back in October, hassled and harried the Wares players not allowing them the time to play their football and on 5 minutes a long ball forward found Karanja who beat his defender and was upended by the onrushing Anguzu just outside the area which resulted in a yellow for Anguzu.

On 18 minutes Waite had the first shot of the day which was blocked by a defender as The Spelly continued to close down Edgware’s play but without creating much themselves and on 23 minutes another long ball had Anguzu rushing to the edge of his area to collect the ball under pressure from Karanja, Anguzu slid in and collected the ball but had to let go of the ball as he was sliding outside the area, Karanja fell on top of Anguzu and as he was getting up he pinned Anguzu to the floor got the ball and carried on into the area, Anguzu got up and chased him down fouling him, penalty to The Spelly and second yellow to Anguzu who protested that Karanja had fouled him in the build up but to no avail so on comes Barkat for Ellery to face the penalty which Lee took and sent Barkat the wrong way 1-0 Spelthorne.

They do say that it is more difficult for teams to play against 10 men and so it proved with The Wares setting up two banks of 4 and hitting The Spelly on the break, Waite having a shot blocked on 29 minutes and Spelthorne now enjoying the lions share of possession pressing hard for another goal with Karanja and Jung both having efforts before half time, but on 45+2 minutes a long ball over the top from Kamara found Waite who calmly slipped the ball past Poole into the bottom corner 1-1.

The beginning of the second half was all Spelthorne, kicking down the hill on 51 minutes Karanja had a shot blocked and on 55 minutes Barkat spread himself to stop Gabaza from giving the visitors the lead.

On 56 minutes from a Spelly corner Barkat pulled off an incredible double save from Karanja and Jung, The Wares defended well but Davison was a thorn in the side from set pieces winning all the headers but The Wares defence managed to clear the danger.

Both teams traded shots on target with Barkat again saving from Lewis and Kahdum 3 times and Waite calling Poole into action as the Wares got their Counter attacking game into action.

The last 15 minutes saw The Wares collect three yellow cards from an over fussy referee, Khadum, Bitsindou and Kamara all finding their way into the referees notebook as The Spelly were pressing for a winner but The Wares stood firm and got their well earned point.

A very gutsy performance from Edgware who visit CB Hounslow on the 15th and then Ascot on the 22nd.
